Occasionally, I pick up dropped domains that are associated with someones ebay, amazon, socials etc (or even hmrc, pensions, business) and get all their notifications for transactions, comments/posts etc (I use catch all email on the domains). It's clear to me that the previous registrant would benefit from getting the domain back, they are often locked out of their accounts set up with 2FA and I doubt they are able to get them back.

In these situations, I would prefer to re-unite the previous registrant with the domain for a nominal fee, but attempts to do this usually go south - they just think im a hacker or something, or block me or just dont reply. I usually try to make contact via Facebook once I've established their name. Occasionally I'll find a phone number, but I've not used that option as yet.

I'm wondering if anyone has some tips or examples of successful approaches to this?

do you have landing pages on those domains with a contact form or your contact info?
if positive and the past owners haven't made an effort to reach out - it is not likely they are serious about this registration anymore.

Basically, unless they're contscting you to request obtaining the domain, I'd suggest you stop wasting your ( and their ) time.

Set all the emails to bounce, any part-decent system will stop sending them, the registrant of the previous version of that domain didn't think it was even worth renewal-fee.
