The admin staff they get to register these domains in the backend do they understand the value of them. Also I believe after merges like this they renew the domains for 10 years, and then when 10 years pass, the member of staff responsible leaves the company and the domain expires...
I've had the later a few times, staff leaving post, no one given responsibility, new management scramble to get the domain back...
