Hi,

I'm looking for advice in catching a .com domain that is might well drop.

It's already been a month or more since the domain expired.

I've never done this before as I normally just trade.

What is the best advice please?

i.e. what are the very best services I can use?

Thanks for your help!

Here's a blog post I bookmarked ages ago that makes for a good read and is still getting comments:

It's very dated so I expect the top players have changed, but the techniques they use to extract as much money from you as possible probably haven't.

I may be in the same situation later this year, so please keep us informed about how you get on.

Depending on the registrar, it may not drop - have you checked their post-expiry sales platform ?

I caught 26 .com yesterday with dropcatch.com - providing no else bids, you will win it. If multiple bid - then you go to auction. Make sure you verify your account as you need it for bidding.

Just to update on the domain I was trying to buy... let's put it this way. It was the .com version of our most successful site Maths couk

It was caught by Snapnames, so we had a chance to bid against 78 others who had also backordered it.

It was a purely defensive move, and our highest bid was $91,000 USD.

We didn't win, but it was fun while it lasted!

I guess the flip side is that I wouldn't have done much with it, and that 91k can be used in plenty of other ways.

So what was the winning bid, and was the auction open to anybody, or only those who had backordered with Snapnames?

Personally I think you've dodged a bullet because Americans (and Canadians?) use the word "math", so I'm not sure maths.com would work over there.

As for other ways to spend $91k, I recommend booze, birds and fast cars. Or you could just squander it. (Credit: George Best)

It seemed the only people bidding in the final 3 days had already bid the initial $70 USD. Certainly that's how it seemed to me.

It sold for $98,000 USD if I remember correctly.

I was actually away getting some winter sun with my wife in Gran Canaria when the auction closed. Sitting in a restaurant at 8pm trying to bid on a phone wasn't probably the most strategic of moves!

I've just been looking at the coming soon page on maths.com and it's unclear whether it's planning to target the UK or the US market.

The consistent use of the word "maths" suggests the UK market, but the date format "June 1st, 2025" and the US host suggest the US market. Two "personalised" versus one "personalized" only add to the confusion.

Can you shed any light @philiporchard ?

No idea, but quite interested to see these features take shape!

If they ever happen. Features like "Upload your handwritten work, and AI not only checks your answers but also provides personalized feedback on your working-out method" seem like pie in the sky to me.

Yes, given than AI is quite shite.
