  • The hypervisor measures ~3ms RTT to epp.nominet.org.uk:700, while a differently-transited box measured 22–29ms
  • Slough Trading Estate is the densest datacentre cluster in the UK — the Equinix LD4/LD5/LD6 campus among others — and is where the low-latency-to-UK-registry providers cluster for exactly this reason.

    Our catching infrastructure is hosted in Slough, in the same datacentre cluster as the UK's primary internet exchange and peering fabric, with a measured sub-4ms round-trip to Nominet's EPP endpoint — placing us in the fastest tier of network positions available for .uk drop catching.
 
Since the days of the DAC, I don't see how being as close as possible is much of an advantage anymore.
 
When a request hits the LB it's queued FIFO. It doesn't matter if you send your request from Mars.
Timing is the key, It's all about when your request hits the LB.

Right but you still want to be as lag free as possible to accurately time your entry, right?

Factoring in your 1ms is the same as factoring in 3ms. As long as you are stable. "Anywhere in London", the result is the same.
You can still fire off in the same way; you are not wasting budget.

What is massively more important and what wins a catch is guessing the contested delay. It's a moving target determined by how popular the domain is. This is far more important than 1 ms here or 1ms there. I have in the past caught contested domains using my home broadband on a Raspberry Pi... with a Chat GPT script I knocked up in a couple of hours - Which must go to show that it's all about timing. And latency, not so much.

interesting insight Laz, and you’re competitive? What has stopped you from creating a competitive code base?
 
I was under the impression that their EPP server was in LD6
Don't recall a recent update from 'tech' about how much of the systems have been punted off with the fairies ( the centrslised database has which may negate all the time/distance to edge stuff ) but the footprint shrunk to 2 suppliers, 4 locations.

For a company flogging dns as a service, they're terrible at maintaining the reverse :(
