Would be interesting to see the current list of say the oldest 100 uk domain names.

cjclark.co.uk :: 1994-08-02

This domain is available to register :) I'm thank, you register a domain on day one, don't just register "clark" or "cj" and 3 decades later it is available - if they knew what we knew now.

I made a thread on Acorn about this a couple of years back and in fact there were a number of domains registered before 1994.

Below is a list of the earliest registered .co.uk domains from a RIPE post giving the RIPE DNS hostcount as of end of July 1993. Reg dates aren't given but since the domains were in existence at that time they were registered in 1993 or earlier.

It is possible that other .co.uk domains had also been registered by that point but were not on the list for one reason or another (e.g. not in use or registered then cancelled prior to that date etc). But we can say that these domains were certainly registered and in use at that time, and as such are veritable antiques in the .co.uk namespace,.

Of course some of these domains have since expired and been re-registered, indeed some are owned by Acorn regulars (including moi!) and a fair few are even available to reg.

Funnily enough acorn is first on the list, but no not acorndomains! In the pevious century people chose company names that would appear near the top of the phone book! How times have changed.

Searching for some of the content of the post I managed to find a copy of the original post again on the web. Here it is:

Was the Whois introduced later, as when I check firefox.co.uk it says 1996, you don't see many any earlier?

I take it as these pre-date WHOIS data being public etc?

Not sure when a public whois was launched. I think Nominet came on the scene in 1996 and prior to that uk domains were free, you probably had to fax over a reg request with your registrant details.

But the current whois does show pre-Nominet domain reg dates. Here's an early one from 1994:

leicester.co.uk

Domain Repository Object Identifier: D_7680503-UK

Lifecycle

Domain Expiry 2027-11-25T15:41:49Z
Domain last updated2024-01-30T01:43:05.564696Z
Domain created1994-11-25T15:41:49Z

But I don't think the dates are at all reliable. For example I noticed that some names in the above list of 124 domains that we know for a fact existed in 1993, now have reg dates according to Nominet's whois database that are much later than that. E.g. these 2 which have 1995 reg dates:

bt.co.uk

Domain Repository Object Identifier: D_7568123-UK

Lifecycle

Domain Expiry 2025-08-30T08:35:48Z
Domain last updated2023-08-23T08:36:03.43804Z
Domain created1995-08-30T08:35:48Z

barclays.co.uk

Domain Repository Object Identifier: D_16689503-UK

Lifecycle

Domain Expiry 2026-01-04T09:36:15Z
Domain last updated2024-12-31T06:05:13.609806Z
Domain created1995-01-04T09:36:15Z

Nominet took over .uk in 96 thats right. Before that it was a paper system, you literally had to fill out a form. Can you imagine that now :ROFLMAO: When Nom took over, public WHOIS service was launched. Prior to Nominet's formation, the .uk namespace was managed by a voluntary group known as the "Naming Committee," which allegedly struggled to handle the increasing volume of domain registrations, and that is when Nominet was created.

First .uk domain registrations seem to be dating back to 2nd August 1994.

Those were registered on that day and were still registered as of recently:

Would be interested to know what your source is for this Ben?

What I did was ask ChatGPT and it returned some crazy hallucination
That's why I call it ShitGPT. It doesn't know right from wrong, fact from fiction. Then there's no way of verifying anything using it.

It’s not too bad now, it’s usually pretty good if you ask it back it up with sources but it couldn’t find any, and then told me it made it up 😂

I asked it to check one of my domain names, "where does the domain redirect?" It got it wrong completely. " are you sure? " I asked. It apologised and said a completely different website which was also incorrect. I ended up assisting it like a boy scout helping an old lady crossing a busy road.

I just asked it what domains a platform had for sale at the moment, it said they sold their domains on Atom. They don't. It cited pages that didn't say anything to do with the connection between the two platforms.

It just spits out words, guessing the next word based on probability as it goes. It's a pile of utter shite in my humble opinion.

I use it knowing that it is wrong at all times.

Worse at coding. It'll break something, you'll say fix Z you broke, it'll go - SURE! Let's see. AH YES, the problem is that we are doing X the wrong way, let me change it to Y across all 50 functions in your file. You'll then have to say, no, that's wrong, it was right the first time, X doesn't have anything to do with Z, wtf? Now you have broke X because you changed it to Y. It will say, OH YES I HAVE FOUND THE ISSUE!

It'll then undo the errors it made, and say, "I have fixed the issues with Z, it was because Y was supposed to be X" 🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡

Google's AI also tries to bluff and bullshit. It seems the developers of these AI systems are far more keen to impress and give an appearance of omniscience with confident answers rather than give answers that are as truthful as possible. But you don't have to drill down very far with questions before massive cracks start appearing in the quality of answers given.

Elon said they are training them to lie. That doesn't surprise me at all. I suspect there's probably a more truthful version for the owners of the AI systems/ senior staff and perhaps other elites. But even if they didn't train it to lie to the public, if it's using the Web for its information it's going to be seriously flawed. There's so much bullshit propaganda reported in the mainstream media, accepted by society and hence disseminated across the Web that any AI system would have a hard time figuring out what has actually happened in the world. How would it know if something is false but propagated by official sources/ "respected" news outlets or indeed if something is true but designated a conspiracy theory by the same sources?

If there is a truthful AI that elites are using to give themselves an information advantage over everyone else and I have no doubt there is, they are going to have to rewrite history so their own system isn't fooled by the very propaganda they have been pumping out to the masses.
