Looky — A UK Domain Tool

Looks good, but reluctant to test properly because of the recent searchers being displayed.

Likely to be a data protection breach in its current form, but not an expert on that…

It's not personal data though.

I'm open to what you're saying. But I guess my argument is how much more transparent can you get than a large "recent lookups" section right where you put a domain in?

My other argument is that it is a bit odd that it is stored and available for everyone else, given the nature of what people are wanting to look up. Most likely use case is not wanting others having their greasy mitts on the info.

If you are confident the ICO would agree with you then all good. I’m not so sure this is transparency. I’ll leave it there, I do like what you are doing, so hopefully not sounding too negative.

I am not confident 😁. Happy to explore the idea further to find out...

What I find odd, as with all of these rules and regulations, is that having something detailed in a privacy policy that nobody ever reads, is good enough to satisfy and explain away all possible collection and use of data. But nobody reads it or cares.

I would say I am not collecting any personal information, and the information being collected is for security and transparency, deemed as necessary. We are not setting any relevant cookies with the app, it is simply a research tool. I may add a feature in future where you can pay X to have your search privatised, or some sort of package or whatever, but as it stands transparency is key. But I am happy to be proven different so that I can improve the experience.

I will add that we do need to have a forward facing privacy policy and some GDPR stuff, but as it's in a sort of development phase it's constantly changing and I don't see it being useful.

Thanks!

Just out of interest, why is transparency key?

I don't know, really. I just feel like out of fairness for everybody else.

For criticism sake, what do you not like about it, and how would you prefer it be?

It's not for me to tell you what to do with your tool (lol).

In fact, you should stick to your guns and not have people tell you what your vision for your thing should be. Design by committee generally sucks ass.

If you have a hunch about this then that's fair enough. A searches are public under the box would satisfy the privacy policy fetishers. Or don't.

You have given me an idea though. Perhaps a checkbox, which is check by default, and has to be unchecked to make the lookup add to the list.

EDIT: WIP

Of course. If I'm wanting to look up the info of a domain I want to buy cheaply, why would I want to broadcast it to all of 4m, Ben, all his buddies etc. Its a deal breaker for any real use.

Yes, that is understandable which is why I am implementing the check box to let you choose whether or not the results should be public.

Hello fellow 4m users, you will be pleased to know I have successfully implemented this privacy feature, which was most requested. Please test, (nicely) and feel free to give feedback, or bugs etc.

Thanks

Small updates, more info added to the panel including nameservers, where they originate from and the status code of each domain. Also updated the messaging and some other small visual changes. Feedback always welcome.

Looky v1.4

Updated the UI to be more cohesive and friendly.
Upcoming dropping valuable domains for today and tomorrow now listed, this will be worked on in a future version to include SEO domains.
Blog introduced to give SEO a boost, can't promise any frequent updates lol.

Lots of updates on Looky recently. Not just the app side of things, but also the website as a whole. We have moved the app into /app and launched our main site onto the root. A bunch of backend customisation happening right now, with already 3/4 custom plugins gathering intel and working for us day + night to create some really exciting data to work with, with the help of AI. I'm hoping to shape Looky into a all-in-one service for lookups and analysis of UK domains in general, plus a place where you can read about general UK domain industry stuff.

I'll keep improving things on this end, but I am enjoying the project so far, and hope that some of the active users are too.
