The .uk domains spotted in the wild thread

Whenever people say.uk is dead I just think of how many brands I set up every single year using.uk and how I would miss it if it did not exist. Personally, as somebody who has invested a lot of time money and effort into.uk, I would rather not use a.co.uk. It is too long. It’s too boring and it is too offbrand. I mean what the fuck does the co stand for? And what is the fucking point in using it when.uk exists?

There was no need for the .co to ever be in there, it would have been a lot cleaner/neater looking to simply have went with .uk from the start, I definitely agree on that point.

But a shorter url on an ad on the side of a bus or on your business card just really isn't worth it for all the confusion you're going to cause. I suppose you can mitigate this by owning the .co.uk and making sure it redirects, with a catch-all email on it too. Its just extremely foolish to go with a .uk if you don't own the .co.uk.

bbc.co.uk looks right bbc.uk looks shite

it’s familiarity, it will always be too late for .uk. The boat has sailed and Nominet should never have released it.

As much as I agree that people will probably think it's .co.uk if it's not drilled into them, the amount of confusion is up for debate.

It's all anecdotal that there is confusion especially given that not many people are using .UK.

What percentage of people will fail to get to your site if you advertised a .UK instead of a .co.uk? You can't answer that question....

Most people go through Google, so they probably don't give a shit about the domain as long as the website contains the service that they expect when they visit.

It looks good. Shame about the content, that's the reason I won't visit, whether it's co.uk or not.

Obviously it is not true that .co.uk looks better. Objectively it does not. Yes, it is undisputable that it is recognisable by all in the UK, unless you just got put up at tax payers' expense in a 5 star hotel... But it doesn't look better to you for any other reason other than you're used to it. That's fair enough.

Actual facts.

I agree on the first part. As I have said before, its a big cock up by Nominet for not doing a transition a bit like when area codes had the 1 added in.

Cash grab v longer term health of .UK though... and I would imagine those who made the decision are now well remunerated and long gone.

I too agree that it was a right cock up and should have just been a transition. Because it was done in a way to make money as you say.

I do, however, think that there's some decent organic use of .UK which is nice. Far more than years ago.

What looks better is subjective. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

True. Depends whether he's actually talking about what looks better or what is better.

I would never say that .com.au is better looking than .au. Or .co.il better looking than .il. Would he I wonder?

Their eyes are firmly fixed on the first menu item on gov.uk
Why not, our Government is pathetic, no wonder we get taken advantage of by these people. I wouldn't mind if they brought something to the table, but 90% of them are adult males of working age with nothing on their mind but crime.

I saw http://carboncapture.uk which redirects to Woodland Heritage.

I'm hoping that's just a brilliant troll aimed squarely at this radical leftist Labour govt.
