Ryan - AMA

Small minds discuss people. Average minds discuss events. Great minds discuss ideas.
And tiny minds keep making posts from a book of quotes.... or get paid to pose such great deep philosophical questions as 'What size LCD do you have on your computer?' or 'Are you a good dancer?'

Hi Ryan

Welcome, we appreciate you joining our little community.

Is your plan to consolidate all leading .uk platforms under your umbrella, aggressively acquire Nominet, then sell to GoDaddy, retire as a multi billionaire and undertake a space walk in a gold space suit? 🧐🛎️😉
Thank you.

No brandable and flip will be replicated into 190 countries next year.

Nominet aren't worth acquiring - they prefer to do dodgy dealings with friends.

0% chance of selling to Godaddy - statistically more likely that we will acquire Godaddy than the other way around. They have big problems and cannot get investor returns and thats why they switched to AI side of things.

Godaddy is a corporation which is a shadow of itself after Bob left.

We run a family business so hugely different - and i pick up the phone when people need me - name one CEO that does that?

I’m sure it was all made in the name of good humour, but I think I mentioned somewhere else earlier in the month about how it feels like it’s going too far. Sometimes it even feels like bullying. I’m not saying this is people’s intentions, but often times we as a species get carried away and don’t realise how much weight words can carry.

I for one welcome Ryan and anyone else to the forum, but it would be great if everyone that joined was transparent and honest about their dealings and, if we’re going to allow AMA’s like this, that is what the rules should be. If you want an AMA, you must answer any reasonable question with honesty.
Thank you - i will answer questions honestly as i always do

32" and i dont dance much

Sorry, but these two quotes are wildly inconsistent.

I've also checked and this is the only use of the c word in 2427 posts on this forum, which is ironic indeed given that you were one the few cheerleaders for Helmuts' anti-insult regime at Acorn.

Are you testing your boundaries?
Not sure i understand

Interesting thread, I have a question, any ideas to launch a new dan.com alternative? could use one very soon :p
Good luck - look forward to seeing it and the more innovation the better

Thought you already had a cap from the market.

My serious questions are...

There is a video going around where you state that you were attempting to gain a 5 year period of exclusivity for all expiring Nominet domains. In the same video you say that you were making an offer for DomainLore. So I guess my questions are:

1). How can you expect to be perceived positively within a community full of drop catchers, when you are open with your intention to destroy their businesses, which in some cases will be side businesses and in others potentially be a large part of their livelihoods and be keeping food in their kids bellies.

2). How much buying activity do you think there would be on DomainLore when there are no drop catchers. Seriously, did you think that one through? Firstly, a load of the fivers Denys gets are from people listing recently caught domains, and most importantly a huge chunk of the buyers will be people spending money they've generated from catching. You appear to want to essentially buy the heart of the dropcatching ecosystem, then cut off the blood supply.

Bonus question....

3). You strike me as an honest guy, perhaps too honest in fact considering the above. How did you rationalise forming a close relationship with, and accepting a platform from, a man who gave a platform (essentially the first person to do so) Adam Dicker, who is clearly an inherently dishonest person. The moment I saw that Helmuts gave Adam Dicker a platform I knew that he was somebody I wanted nothing to do with. I suspect some naivety on your part, but that does somewhat tarnish/damage your reputation in my eyes, by association. It feels a bit like Jordan Henderson ditching the rainbow laces to take a contract in Saudi Arabia.
1) Drop catching is rigged. It would be better for everyone if all domains were auctioned publicly. The UK market is not in good shape - you must acknowledge that?
2) That wasn't the intention but it is a fair point. I didn't mean to kill your business but you have to acknowledge that all domains are caught and liquidated which ruins the end user market. I like how Rob does it - in private. Drop catchers never hold - their is a middle ground where you have 3 buckets of domains - some you flip, some you keep for 12 months and some you hold longterm. If you catch for £5 you should pop a 10 year renewal on some and leave them to get fair market value.
3) I don't quite understand. Are you referring to me buying DNForum? That was from Epik. I am not familiar with Adam Dicker. I was very ill during covid and Helmuts had me on the podcast which gave me confidence despite being well over weight so i am grateful for that and also class Helmuts as a friend. He means well and has a vision for his business

I'm surprised anyone is taking this pie-in-the-sky claim seriously, it's patently preposterous. For a start if Nominet gave one member exclusivity for all expiring domains, the entire membership bar that one would be up in arms and a class action lawsuit would immediately ensue. It's obvious and Nominet know that, and they know they have to be seen to be fair to members and to act in the public interest, not just one member's interest. Secondly even if they were planning on doing something like this it's really obvious they would award the contract a large PLC or one of the giant registrars with the financial resources and infrastructure to handle it, they wouldn't give it to Ryan or anyone else in this forum! Be serious! And thirdly why would they even want to give away a major part of their monopoly? That would be stupid!

Claims like this just make a person look daft. You may as well claim you're in talks with Elon to acquire X. If you keep saying things like that no-one will believe a word you say.
You are entitled to your opinion. I'm pretty sure Nominet CEO bought a cyber security business for $xxxm and then sold it to his best friend for £1.

The daft thing is a matter of perspective. Ultimately what have you done in the last 20 years or however long you have been in domains for? Perhaps being a bit daft may help you try something out of your comfort zone and who knows....

If the OP is genuinely Ryan Ewen, then don't you all think he's just trying to set the cat amongst the pigeons?

Until he brings value to you, stop giving him a platform either here on this forum, or even in your thoughts.

It's wasted energy.

I'd like to start seeing some genuine threads of interest related UK domains, affiliate marketing, design, digital marketing, copywriting tips, marketing ideas, useful WordPress plugins, productivity tools, automations, etc., and less about Ryan, Helmets, and the fallen acorn.
I agree. Create a forum that adds value and isnt focused on getting angry with Me, Helmuts or IT-com

And i do add value - you just are not being honest

Worst AMA in history.

Invites questions, gives zero answers and calls somebody a cunt.

I hope you are okay Ryan (genuinely) as Helmuts hinted at mental health issues, and this thread doesn't do much to suggest otherwise.

I like Flip.uk by the way, its a nice looking site and seller backend easy to use. You build an equivalent for all extensions, probably be wearing quadruple gold if one of those takes off.
I'm all good. No idea what Helmuts referred to - flip is good - we've just been consumed with Brandable, DNWE, Domain Manage, 29k coms and life!

Auctions aren't a fair system either. Those with the most money get the domain. Money goes to money.

Dropcatching is a more fair system. Especially for those that have the skills and knowledge to develop their own systems.

The system being rigged is a failure on Nominets end.

Godaddy has a market capitalisation of £22.7bn. Its about 9 times more valuable than Virgin Money PLC, the UK's 6th largest retail bank which was just acquired by Nationwide for £2.9bn.

I do worry about you a little when you make comments like this to be honest. Not sure if you are being serious or if light-heartedness is difficult to replicate in text on an internet forum, but if its the former then that is some serious delusion.

I feel that a fairer system might just be a lottery, and each nominet member being to assign a certain number of lottery tickers per month.

40 people use a ticket for a dropping domain. One of them gets drawn, your odds are 40/1 (could do any domains with more than 10 tickets in a live streamed randomiser/draw if necessary).

0 tickets domain gets deleted.

Put the nominet membership fee up a bit if necessary to run the randomiser and hire some beautiful woman to do the weekly Friday night live draws on a YouTube stream.

Would probably increase membership numbers a bit if there wasn't a huge learning curve and other barriers to entry.

Same. It negatively impacts credibility of everything else said, too.

I've never given the process much thought as I'm not involved with it, but of the 3 solutions (current, auction, and lottery), lottery is certainly the fairest (in theory) as it's genuinely randomised.
